Floods of Freedom
Fluten der Freiheit (GER) / Floods of Freedom (ENG), 2024, Screen, 3D Animation with in depth sound design
In my 3D animation project, a powerful message unfolds, skillfully combining visual and auditory elements. The animation depicts the creation of a life vest, whose components are formed from the significant words ‘Democracy,’ ‘Peace,’ and ‘Safety.’ This symbolically represents the deep yearning of refugees for these fundamental values, which often drive their perilous journeys across dangerous oceans. The extension of this visual experience through sound design adds a profound dimension to the animation. The acoustic elements are crafted in such a way that the viewer is immersed in an emotional experience that reflects a grim reality often encountered during such crossings: drowning. By intentionally using water sounds, like waves and underwater noises, alongside human elements such as breathing and heartbeat in the background, a tense and oppressive atmosphere is created. The purpose of this sound layer is to encourage the viewer to empathize with the refugees plight and experience an intense ‘goosebumps’ moment. The combination of visual and auditory stimuli is intended not only to inform but also to evoke emotional resonance. By confronting the audience with the real challenges and dangers refugees face, a deeper connection and understanding of their struggle is fostered. This project, therefore, aims not only to raise awareness about the precarious situation of refugees but also to emphasize the urgent need for humanitarian efforts and global solidarity. This project delves deeply into the journey of refugees across the seas. On their arduous path, they place their hopes on finding democracy, peace, and security in Europe. However, the ocean crossing holds not only the dream of a better life but also significant dangers. Many have already lost their lives by exposing themselves to the unpredictable elements of the sea. The challenges associated with this journey extend far beyond physical risks. Refugees must also confront the emotional and psychological burdens that come with the uncertainty of what lies ahead. This project aims to shed light not only on the external aspects of this journey but also on the internal struggles of those embarking on this perilous path. By capturing personal stories, experiences, and challenges, the project seeks to raise awareness of the humanity behind the statistics. This is done in the hope of fostering a constructive dialogue about the global challenges of migration and the need for a compassionate and coordinated response. In this way, the project becomes a powerful tool for deepening understanding and evoking empathy for those crossing dangerous waters in search of a safer and more hopeful life.
Artist Statement: As an artist, I find water to be a profound and multifaceted element that transcends its physical form. It embodies fluidity, change, and the delicate balance between life and death. In my work, water represents both hope and danger—an endless horizon of possibility and a vast unknown filled with peril. It is a metaphor for the journeys many take in search of freedom, democracy, and security, particularly those who cross treacherous seas seeking a better life. Water holds the power to connect us, reminding us of our shared human experience, yet it can also divide, symbolizing the risks and sacrifices made in pursuit of dreams. By incorporating water into my art, I aim to evoke empathy and reflection, urging viewers to engage with the emotional and physical struggles faced by those who brave the oceans depths. Through the fluidity of sound and imagery, I hope to inspire a deeper understanding of these journeys and the urgent need for global solidarity. Water, in its essence, is a symbol of survival, resilience, and the eternal quest for hope.
